Installation

The template is a version of the document that never changes: you always have a clean source for producing new documents. It follows that opening a template directly in Word should only be done when you are modifying a master that will serve as a source for all future documents.

We recommend copying all templates to the Office Template folder for the following reasons:

  • In Windows, all WordLab templates can be used by simply double-clicking on the template. This will automatically produce a new document from the template without changing the original. On the Macintosh, this action will often open the template directly rather than producing a new file from it. We strongly recommend that Macintosh users install their templates in the Office Templates: My Templates folder.
  • On some installations of Windows, Word cannot find the macro programming in a template unless it is in the Office Templates folder.
  • For all users, you can access your templates using the File/New menu command of your software.

The chart below shows the default location for the Office Templates folder. You can also find the location using these steps:

  • Open Word
  • If you are using any Windows version of Word, choose the Tools/Options menu choice. In Mac Word 98 for Mac, choose Tools/Preferences. In Word 2001 for Mac, choose Edit/Preferences. In Word X and Word 2004 for Mac, choose Word/Preferences.
  • Click on the File Locations tab, then on the User Template option. If necessary, click on the Modify button to see the complete path to your Office Templates folder.

Your IT department may have set up your system with a different configuration: consult them if you have difficulties.

If you copy the template(s) to the correct location, when you use the File/New command in Word, PowerPoint or Excel, you will see a dialog with your template names in it. Click on it and then the OK button, and you will have a fresh document exactly as it was designed to look.

You can create a custom folder in the Templates folder with your organization name and it will show up as a separate tab in the File/New dialog box. This can be a good way to make them easy to find.

Advanced Installation

Your IT department may have set up a Workgroup Template directory. Templates copied to this folder will automatically appear in the File\New dialog box or Word, PowerPoint or Excel for all users on the network. This can be a much easier route for templates that must be updated from time to time, since only one file or set of files has to be replaced.

You or your IT department can discover or set the source for template folders by using Word's Tools\Options\File Locations menu command. When you open this dialog you can see what your User Templates and Workgroup Templates folders are set to. The User Templates those that are stored locally on your computer, while Workgroup Templates are usually stored on a network drive.

WordPerfect templates are stored by default at C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office 2000\Template\Custom WP Templates for WordPerfect 2000. Use WordPerfect's File\New from Project menu command to create a new document. Simply click on the template and then the OK button, and you will have a new document for your company communications.
